Pennsylvania's Historic Schools

By now, you probably know that I love finding and photographing historic/one-room schools.  My hubby and I drive the back country roads in search of these hidden treasures.  This blog post offers a sampling of some of Pennsylvania’s historic (but not always one-room) schools that we found.
In Memory of One Room Schools ...

In the early years, many schools were multi-purpose serving as church on Sundays, and meeting places for local people and activities.   Since the local church and school shared a common community thread, it is not hard to understand why those opposing an education system supported by public tax dollars felt education should be included as part of the religious instruction.  Over time, laws governing public education were adopted and a state-wide public education system was established.  Eventually, the era of the one-room school ended.  Today, those one-room schools that remain may function as a private home, municipal building, or museum.  In any case, I am thankful to them for preserving a piece of history.
